How to Wear Brown in Summer (And the Colours That Make It Sing)

Somewhere along the way, we were told that brown belongs to autumn. In fact, one of my closest friends, who owns a wonderful boutique in the heart of Tarquinia, told me that she is "done with brown for this season" and won't be stocking it. But I am not quite ready to let it go - if I ever will! I love the fact that it is so versatile and goes with so many other colours. It also makes me feel good - which is after all the important reason of color!
The website, Color Meanings states - Brown is an earthy color frequently associated with security, warmth, stability, simplicity, and resilience.
And we all need some of that at the moment!
In Italy, you will see brown in July — worn with linen, with gold jewellery, with confidence. It is deeply elegant.
Brown is not seasonal. It is soulful.
And the secret to wearing it beautifully in summer lies in understanding what it is made from.
Why Brown Works (Even in the Heat)
Brown is not a “flat” colour.
It is created by mixing primary colours — red, blue and yellow — in different proportions. That means it already contains harmony within it. When you pair brown with one of its “parent” colours, the result feels balanced and intentional.
This is why brown can feel so rich and effortless when styled correctly.
Let’s look at how.
How to wear brown in summer
Brown + Blue: Calm & Expensive
Think chocolate linen trousers with a soft chambray shirt.Or a tan leather sandal against a navy sundress.
Blue cools brown down. It adds freshness. Structure. Modernity.
For women over 50 especially, this combination feels polished without trying too hard.
(And if you are a Cool Summer or Cool Winter, the tone of brown you choose matters enormously — but more on that later.)

Brown + Red: Warm & Confident
Terracotta. Rust. Tomato red. Burgundy.
Red deepens brown and makes it glow. It brings life to the earthiness.
A brown leather bag with a red summer dress feels intentional and European.A burgundy belt against a tan shirt dress? Understated drama.
This pairing is especially beautiful on Autumn palettes — but can also work for Summers if the red is softened.

Brown + Yellow: Sunlit & Joyful
Mustard. Butter yellow. Even a soft primrose.
Yellow lifts brown instantly. It pulls out the golden undertones and makes the whole outfit feel sun-kissed.
Imagine:
A chocolate midi skirt with a soft yellow blouse
A straw bag with a brown leather trim against a pale yellow dress
It feels like Tuscany in July.

Brown + Purple: Unexpected & Elegant
This is where it becomes interesting.
Plum, aubergine, lavender — these shades create depth against brown. Because purple contains red and blue, it naturally harmonises with the undertones already in brown.
The result? Sophistication.
Think espresso linen with a muted lavender silk scarf.

Brown + White: Clean & Mediterranean
Perhaps the most classic of all.
Brown against crisp white feels architectural and fresh. It’s the easiest way to wear brown in summer without it feeling heavy.
White linen trousers. Brown sandals. Gold jewellery.
Understated. Confident. Italian.

Brown + Burgundy: Deep Summer Drama
Burgundy works because brown already carries red within it.
This pairing is rich and grown-up. Especially beautiful for women who feel washed out in black but still want depth.
A burgundy pedicure with tan sandals.A chocolate bag with a deep wine dress.
It whispers rather than shouts.

But Here’s the Important Part…
Not all brown suits everyone.
Some browns are golden and warm. Some are cool and almost taupe. Some lean towards red. Some lean towards green.
If you have ever felt:
“Brown makes me look tired.”
“Camel washes me out.”
“Chocolate feels too heavy on me.”
It is rarely the colour itself. It is the undertone.
And this is where understanding your colouring changes everything.
When you know whether you are warm or cool, soft or clear, deep or light, brown becomes a tool — not a gamble.
