RO&OZ
RO&OZ

The other morning, after a long period of rain and wearing Barbour coats and carrying an umbrella, it suddenly turned really cold again, unexpectedly.  I was rushing out for the train in the very early morning and realised that I wasn’t prepared for this, so I grabbed my husband’s padded coat, stuck a beanie on my head and a random scarf around my neck and ran!

The station is a 40-minute walk there and back and I have to wear trainers.  I am really not a trainer girl; they don’t align with my style personality and don’t make me feel good.  Even the one’s I bought from GEOX, which are slim-lined, and VERY comfortable.  If I could, I would walk the distance in high heels, or pointed ballet flats, but unfortunately these days I need to have extra support for that distance, so trainers it is!

However, what I need to make sure I do is change out of the trainers into shoes more suited to my personality before I go to any meeting, see a client, or do anything that needs me to feel empowered or confident.  Yes, the right shoes really do have that effect on me – as does the right outfit.

It was borne home even more when I caught the train home.  I was wrapped up in aforementioned outerwear and was wearing my trainers - which really didn’t go with the ¾ length carrot fit, pinstriped trousers and red tights I had on! – and stood next to a lady who looked wonderful.  She had a pair of black boots, black trousers (so far, so ordinary!), but on top of that she had a beautiful, black, deep piled, faux fur coat and the crowning glory – a seal grey, faux fur, beanie.  She looked marvellous and next to her, with my shopping bags and un-prepared outfit, I felt like a bag lady!

ree

Instead of my outfit being the armour that helps provide the self-confidence I need to get through the day, it became a leaky sieve, with that self-confidence gushing out of the holes!

So, there were three main lessons I learnt, or re-learnt, from this.

1.      Always prepare my outfit for the next day, the night before.  Check the weather and plan accordingly.  This not only saves a ton of time in the morning but means that there should be less wardrobe fails!

2.      Never neglect your outerwear.  We tend to focus on our main outfit and look amazing, smart and put together here, then throw on some old, moth-eaten coat, or an old, battered raincoat, on top, which immediately changes the vibe and also sends out signals to both you and others around you, that you don’t care.  A good overcoat is well worth investing in, as if you get a classic design, this will last for years and uplevel any outfit.

3.      What you wear deeply impacts how you feel and how you show up during the day.  This is a drum that I keep beating, but it is SO important.  If you find your true core self and dress for that person each and every day, whatever that day has in store, you will feel empowered and confident and that will affect how you deal with other people and the events during your day.

ree

What you wear not only affects how you feel, it is also your calling card, or business card to the world.  It lets people know what you think about yourself, how your conduct yourself and your business, what you care about and also, to some degree, what you do for a living.

It is important not just to restrict this to your work wear, but to your leisure/weekend wear too.  I remember bumping into an old friend during Covid and I hadn’t seen her for years.  I was in scruffy jeans and walking shoes and felt so embarrassed when she asked me what I did for work and I mumbled “personal stylist”, as I felt nothing like a personal stylist at that point – I certainly wasn’t being a good advert for my business!

ree

I am not suggesting that we have to be on show all the time and wearing our best clothes 24/7, but we do have to be aware of what image we are projecting on ourselves and others.  Afterall, if you spend most of your time gardening or walking the dogs, then doing that in something you feel good about yourself in, even if it is jeans and a sweatshirt, will make you feel happier than hiding away in your scruffiest clothes, praying that you won’t see anyone!

With 2025 bringing fresh takes on classic denim, there's certainly a lot to consider when choosing the perfect pair of jeans. The terms horseshoe, carrot fit, and barrel fit may sound confusing at first, but each cut has its own unique appeal and can be flattering for different body shapes.

Here’s a quick breakdown of these fits and how they might flatter various shapes:

1.      Horseshoe Fit: The horseshoe fit has a distinctive shape, with a wider waistband and a gentle flare at the hem, resembling the curve of a horseshoe. It tends to emphasise the waist and hips, making it a great choice for those with an hourglass or pear-shaped figure. This cut can add curves where you want them and balance out proportions, creating a lovely silhouette.

2.      Carrot Fit: Carrot fit jeans have a relaxed, loose fit around the thighs that gradually tapers down to a narrow ankle. This style is ideal for those with more athletic or straight body shapes, as it adds softness around the hips while still elongating the legs. The tapering effect at the ankle makes the legs look longer, so it’s a great option for petite frames too.

ree

3.      Barrel Fit: Barrel fit jeans are a bit of a hybrid between loose and structured. They tend to have a straight cut that’s roomy through the thighs and calves but keeps a slightly tapered shape towards the ankle. This style is very versatile and can flatter a wide range of body types. It can give the illusion of longer legs while keeping a relaxed, contemporary feel. Ideal for those who enjoy comfort without sacrificing shape.

Universally Flattering?

While the different cuts may appeal to various body types, the great news is that all three of these styles have been designed with inclusivity in mind. The way they’re constructed—especially in 2025—means that they tend to work well for most body shapes. Whether you're looking for something that enhances curves or smooths out a straighter frame, these jeans are likely to complement your shape.

Ultimately, the key to finding a flattering fit is trying on different styles and seeing how they make you feel. Comfort plays a huge role in how flattering an outfit can be, and with these new fits, you’re likely to find a pair that works for you.

Styling a horseshoe fit jean can be a lot of fun because this particular cut offers a unique balance between structure and softness. The wider waistband and flared hem create a flattering shape that can be enhanced with various styling choices. Here are some tips to make the most of the horseshoe fit.

1. Tops to Pair with Horseshoe Fit Jeans:

  • Fitted or Cropped Tops: Since horseshoe jeans are often roomy in the leg area, pairing them with a more fitted or cropped top helps balance the proportions and highlight your waist. A fitted turtleneck or cropped jumper would look great tucked in or left slightly loose.

  • Button-Down Shirt: A slightly oversized shirt tucked in at the waist can create a polished, chic look. Alternatively, you could tie the shirt at the waist to emphasise the curve and keep it modern.

  • Blazers or Tailored Jackets: A structured blazer can elevate your look, making it perfect for both casual and more polished occasions. It will also help define your silhouette and accentuate the waist.

  • Simple T-shirts or Sweatshirts: If you’re going for a more relaxed vibe, a classic white tee or a laid-back sweatshirt can work well with the horseshoe fit, especially when tucked in or tied at the waist to maintain shape.

2. Footwear to Complement the Fit: 2. Footwear to Complement the Fit:

What shoes you wear with these jeans will really make a difference to the vibe you want, much more so than other more traditional style of jean.  A chunky boot can give a boho, relaxed vibe, but yet a court shoe can make the same pair of jeans look classic and smart.

  • Heels or Platforms: A great way to elongate your legs and add some height is with a pair of heels or platform shoes. Whether you go for sleek stilettos or chunky heels, these will help accentuate the jeans’ flare.

  • Ankle Boots: A pair of ankle boots with a pointed toe will work beautifully with the horseshoe fit, especially if the jeans are cropped slightly at the ankle. It keeps the look modern and adds a touch of edge.

  • Trainers or Chunky Sneakers: For a more casual approach, trainers can give your outfit a relaxed vibe while still looking stylish. This is especially effective with mid to high-rise horseshoe jeans that emphasise the waist.

  • Loafers or Mules: For a smart-casual look, slip on some loafers or mules. They’re comfortable but chic, and the clean lines of the shoes will complement the structured fit of the jeans.

ree

3. Accessories to Add Style:

  • Wide Belts: A bold, wide belt can be an excellent way to enhance the waistband of horseshoe jeans, drawing attention to the waist. This is especially effective if you want to create an hourglass shape.

  • Statement Bags: A structured, statement bag can add polish and personality to your look. Whether it's a sleek crossbody or an oversized tote, choose something that contrasts nicely with the relaxed nature of the jeans.

  • Layered Jewellery: Delicate layered necklaces or bracelets can bring a bit of elegance to the overall look. If you prefer a bolder style, chunky gold jewellery can provide a contrasting edge.

ree

4. Layering & Outerwear:

  • Denim Jackets or Leather Jackets: For a bit of texture and contrast, pair your horseshoe jeans with a classic denim jacket or a leather biker jacket. It’s a cool, laid-back combination that still looks intentional.

  • Coats & Trench Coats: During cooler months, a long trench coat or wool coat can create a sophisticated, elegant appearance while keeping the jeans as the focal point.

5. Keep it Balanced:

The horseshoe fit already has some volume at the bottom with its slight flare, so balancing it out with more fitted or structured pieces on top is key to maintaining proportion. However, if you prefer a more relaxed look, a loose or oversized top can still work as long as it’s slightly tucked in or knotted.

Colour and Fabric:

  • Light Denim or Black Jeans: Light wash horseshoe jeans will lend a more casual, vintage vibe, while darker denim or black versions can be dressed up for evening looks or professional settings. You could also experiment with different fabric finishes, such as distressed or raw hems for a more relaxed style.

By playing with proportions and accessorising thoughtfully, you can create a variety of looks with horseshoe fit jeans, from casual chic to smart elegance. It’s all about finding the right balance between comfort and style!

Italy has so much to offer and anyone who has been there will find that they can’t get enough of it and want to keep on going back.  The whole Country has an allure that gets under your skin, from the beauty of the countryside and architecture, the art that is found in even the remotest and plainest of churches, the food, the music, the clothes, to the very special people who live there.

ree

And probably, if you have visited – even if it just in your imagination – you will be dreaming of owning a house there and living the famous dolce vita.

Something else you might be dreaming about, is to be able to dress with the effortless style that Italian women are renowned for.  Italian style is a way of life.  The much used phrase of “bella figura” is about making a good impression, exuding confidence and respect for oneself and for others around you.

They seem to have an innate sense of elegance and I am often asked what their secret is and can anyone do it?

ree

My answer?  Yes you can and I am here to help you find out how!

My first question to you would be -

Why Do You Want To Dress Like An Italian Woman?

What is it that you love about how Italians dress?  Is it the monochrome outfits? The way they just add a pair of sunglasses to lift any outfit?  The classic way they match their shoes and bags? Or just how every outfit they wear seems to be elevated somehow?

Or maybe you have noticed how they are not ashamed of their femininity, even in a masculine environment and they use it to their advantage.

Once you understand the elements you admire, the easier it is to incorporate them into your own style.

ree

Step 1

Grooming is an all-important part of any Italian’s style.  Their hair is well looked after and styled, their makeup is immaculate and well applied and they pay special attention to their nails, even if they don’t have a professional manicure.  Shoes and other accessories are always well looked after, clean and mended.

ree

Step 2

Prepare to go bold!

Italians differ from the French in the fact that where the French prefer a minimalist look, Italians go all out maximalist!  The Romans and the Milanese do differ in this (more of that in a separate blog) – the Romans preferring a more streamlined, classic look and the Milanese are much more exuberant.  But whatever look it is, they always go bold with at least one piece of clothing or accessory. Italians never shout designer in their clothes and are always mixing up designer items with high street items to keep their look unique to them.

ree

Step 3

Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise!

Statement necklaces and lots of bangles or cuffs will immediately upgrade your outfit to an Italian look.  Belts are a must and scarves are often used to bring the whole outfit together.

And of course, don’t forget the large, over-the-top sunglasses which permanently adorn an Italian’s face!

ree

Step 4

Remain feminine but dress appropriately.

I don’t mean for your age here, but for the occasion. Always respect the place or event you are going to, by dressing appropriately for it.  Never wear shorts to a church, or casual outfits to an Italian’s house for supper.

An Italian women will embrace her femininity, but never show off too much skin.  A glimpse of a shoulder is far more sexy than a really low neckline, or a slit showing some leg is much more attractive than a really short skirt or shorts.

ree

Dress with intent.

Italians will always dress to please themselves and dress with intent.  By that I mean that whatever they wear matters.  They won’t just throw on an old coat over a smart outfit, or slip on a pair of shoes just because they are comfy.  Everything will be worn for a reason, to elevate the outfit or to tone an outfit down.  They plan what they are going to wear and make sure that it all works, even down to the underwear.

ree

There is an Italian word, sprezzatura

There is an Italian word, sprezzatura – which translates to a kind of effortless grace and this epitomises Italian style – the art of making something difficult look easy, or maintaining a nonchalant demeanour.

ree

So, by pinpointing what exactly draws you to Italian women’s style, you can begin to incorporate these elements into your own wardrobe in a way that feels authentic to your personal taste.

You may not feel confident enough at the moment to go for show stopping pieces, but by following the above steps and by really thinking, planning and caring about what you put on, will really start you on the road to la bella figura!
